Tips for Traveling Light

We have all seen the old movies where travelers have towers of matching bags, trunks and cases with what must be their entire wardrobe along for a trip. However, in this day and age of baggage fees and weight limits on luggage, packing light for a trip is more important than ever. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you pack smart and light.

Make a list
If you don’t make a packing list, don’t be surprised when you wake up the morning of an important meeting and realize you left your belt at home. In her book How to Stay Healthy and Fit on the Road, travel guru Joanne V. Lichten advises compiling multiple lists — one for two-day business trips, another for a weeklong vacation and so on. Not only does a packing list help you remember what you need, it can also advise you on what you really don’t need to bring.

Pack a little detergent
Washing your own socks, shirts or underwear can really help save space. For the best results, try washing your stuff in the shower, rolling it into a towel, and then stomping up and down on it to squeeze out the excess water before you hang it to dry.

Repurpose
You can easily cut down on what you bring if you pack some items that can serve two or three purposes. Khakis can be used for casual wear or for dinner, and wrap dresses make excellent all-purpose travel garments for casual and dressier occasions.

Limit toiletries
When in doubt, smaller is better. Don’t waste space on full size bottles of toiletries. Rely on travel-sized containers and hotel toiletries during your trip. You can save space portioning out needed doses of medication and storing them in an inexpensive daily pill organizer.

Leave the shoes
Each pair of dress shoes adds 1.5 pounds of weight to your luggage, and that can add up fast. Try to limit yourself to two pairs of shoes, not including the ones you wear on the plane. For men, multipurpose brown dress shoes and a pair of running sneakers should be enough to handle most situations you will come across during your travels. Women should pack a pair of versatile, comfortable ballet flats.
